Anna and Eve

Eve ran into the dank basement as fast as she could and slammed the door. There was no way she was risking one of those things getting in. She pressed her back against the door, and sank down to the ground.

“That could have been really bad,” she breathed heavily to no one in particular.

“Promise me right now Anna, that you’ll never go outside of this room without me by your side.”

“I promise,” replied a shaky voice from the corner. “Aunt Eve?”

“Yes Anna?” responded Eve.

“When will I be able to see my mommy again?”

“Soon Anna, real soon…” Eve couldn’t bear to tell Anna that her mom wouldn’t be coming back anytime soon. Not as a human anyway.

Suddenly there was someone banging on the door screaming, “Let me in! Let me in!”

“It’s sounds like Warren, but why would he be here?” Eve asked aloud as she made her way to the door. As she opened the door, Warren rushed in and quickly shut it behind him.

“Took you long enough!” he gushed. “Here, take this. These supplies should last you a couple more weeks or so. Don’t even ask what I had to do to get them.”

“Thank you Warren. God knows how we’d still be alive without you.”

“Don’t worry about it,” replied Warren nonchalantly. “I’m just glad I got here before dark.”

“Ugh, I reek. Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve been able to clean myself with hot water and soap?” she asked.

“Listen Eve,” Warren sighed, “We could all use a hot shower, I know. But the water was shut off a long time ago, and who knows what’s been festering in the pipes since. It’s just not worth taking a chance.”

Eve knew he was right. That’s what disappointed her the most.

“Warren, do you ever think that–”

The breaking of glass could be heard overhead, along with loud thuds and thumps.

“What the hell was that?!” exclaimed Eve. “There’s no way in hell those things could have gotten in upstairs! It was all boarded up!”

“Shit Eve, they found some way in. Now what are we supposed to do? There’s no way out except up.”

“Aunt Eve, what’s going on?” asked Anna in a frightened voice.

“You don’t worry about anything Anna, Warren and I are going to take care of this. You go hide behind that bookshelf in the corner for now, okay? Don’t come out until we get you, Honey. We’ll be back before you know it.”

Anna whimpered over to the corner and hid out of sight.

“Love you Anna,” Eve said under her breath. “All right Warren, we aren’t left with much of a choice here. Maybe if we can get these monsters away from the house. They won’t even bother coming to the basement. I just want Anna to stay safe…”

“That sounds better then anything I can think of. You sure we can do this?” questioned Warren.

“Not at all,” she admitted. “But then again I never said I was planning on making it back.”

“You’re right. Let’s do this.”

The few moments before throwing open the door and charging upstairs Eve thought about many things. What she couldn’t seem to get her mind off of was unexpected, however. Sure, she was scared to death, and she knew she probably wouldn’t be seeing her niece again. But she couldn’t decide which frightened her more: The fact that flesh-eating beasts awaited her arrival just ten feet above her head, or that her chances of finally getting a hot shower had completely dissipated in the last ten minutes.

  1. The last sentence had that same same kick as ‘mouthwash’, where something huge and something trivial take on the same level of importance. You’re about to take on a horde of the undead, but the prospect of never showering again is just as terrifying. Hope to read more 🙂

  2. It was the first thing I read on here, it was really refreshing to read something that wasn’t just about a shotgun-toting Ash clone. The stories on here are so varied, and it’s always good to read something new. Are you going to write more?

  3. Yeah, I’m actually writing something right now.
It’s what happens when I should be doing my APUSH essay.

I’ll be able to submit it by the end of the day.
Whether it gets posted by then? Who knows.
