Hide and Destroy

In order to get some sort of morale boost and training going on, Slater develops a game called Hide and Destroy or Zack and Seek or something like that. One battalion ( or whatever we are calling the groups of twenty squads) will pose as the invading zombies while the other hunts them down. There are referees to determine tactics, and it’s pretty non-contact, but there’s a lot of smacktalk and incidental injuries. Betting on the results is rampant. Sgt. Meaker blows everyone’s mind by having his weakest squad go up against the opposing battalion–and the other 19 squads from his own battalion.
A cross between Ender’s game and Quidditch, I suppose.

  1. I like the sound of it.
Any game based on true tragedy works better at cheering up the masses and makes life a hell of a lot easier than a game that’s based on nonsense, hence we have ring around the rosey. You have to love the plague leading to an all new children’s rhyme where they discuss their own inevitable death.

  2. I like the idea of it being a children’s game (the kids need something to do) where there is rampant betting among the adults. It could be used to train them for joining Slater’s Soldiers in the future.

And in this game, there’s no “everyone gets a hit” like they do in little league baseball. There’s no false boosts of self esteem. You have to learn to play well, or Zack eats your brains.

  3. Interesting thoughts.

Is “I take an egg-shaped ‘ball’ and run right into Vince Wilfork” based on tragedy or nonsense?

Chris, your idea is good, but I think it comes later, like kids playing hide and seek. Maybe someone starts up a little league, but it starts as a training exercise in the Corps. I agree that nobody gets a trophy for participation. Win or don’t.

Maybe if Tallon ever writes that Scout troop story we use them. I’d originally seen them as the gophers and messengers, but maybe one of them gets the idea.
